The ongoing war in Iran is quietly dismantling the educational prospects of the country's poorest children, a crisis that lacks the sudden, universal visibility of the pandemic-era school shutdowns. Instead of a single, sweeping closure, this conflict is eroding schooling through a slow, grinding process of displacement, economic collapse, and direct attacks on infrastructure. For families already living on the edge, the choice between sending a child to class and putting food on the table has become brutally simple.
Displaced families, often crammed into temporary shelters or with relatives, find that school enrollment is a luxury they cannot afford. Transportation costs are prohibitive, uniforms are a distant memory, and the need for children to work, beg, or care for younger siblings while parents search for income overrides any long-term benefit of education. In many conflict zones, schools themselves have been repurposed as shelters or have been damaged by airstrikes, leaving children with nowhere to go even if they wanted to learn.
The psychological toll is equally devastating. Children who have witnessed violence or lost their homes are struggling to concentrate, and the lack of any stable routine deepens their trauma. Teachers, many of whom have fled or are unpaid, are unable to provide the support these students desperately need. The result is a lost generation, not just in terms of literacy and numeracy, but in basic social skills and hope for the future. While the world focuses on immediate humanitarian needs, the quiet erosion of educational opportunity will have consequences that last far longer than the conflict itself. Without urgent intervention, the most vulnerable children will be locked out of any chance to rebuild their lives.
