G.I. Public Schools Board of Education approves $6,697,700 bid for Gates Elementary School addition and renovation

The project will add new classroom space to the existing building, addressing projected growth in the neighborhood around Gates Elementary. Renovation work will focus on upgrading outdated systems, including heating, cooling, and electrical infrastructure, as well as improving accessibility features to meet current building codes. District officials said the work is scheduled to begin in the coming months, with a target completion date set for the start of the 2026 school year.

Board members discussed the bid during the meeting, noting that the cost came in slightly under the district's initial budget estimate. Funding will come from the district's capital improvement fund, which was established through voter-approved bond measures in previous years. No tax increase is tied to this specific project.

Superintendent officials emphasized that the timeline aims to minimize disruption for students and staff. Construction will be phased, with some work taking place during summer breaks and after school hours. The district plans to keep the school fully operational throughout the project, though some temporary classroom relocations may be necessary for certain grade levels during the heaviest renovation periods.

Gates Elementary, originally built in the 1960s, has not undergone a major renovation in more than two decades. The addition will include four new general education classrooms, a small group instruction room, and expanded restroom facilities. The renovation portion will also update the school's main office area and improve the drop-off and pickup zone for parents.

This approval follows a series of similar projects across the district in recent years, as Grand Island Public Schools continues to address both enrollment growth and the age of its building stock. The board is expected to review construction schedules and progress reports at future meetings.
