Mount Logan Middle School teacher receives inaugural Utah civic education award

LOGAN - A social studies teacher at Mount Logan Middle School has been named one of eight educators statewide to receive the inaugural Founders' Five Excellence in Civic Education Award. The new honor, created to recognize outstanding work in teaching civics and government, was announced earlier this week by the Utah-based organization behind it.

The award highlights teachers who go beyond standard lessons to help students understand how government works, why participation matters, and how citizens can make a difference. Recipients were chosen from a pool of nominees across the state, with selection based on classroom innovation, student engagement, and community involvement.

The Mount Logan teacher, whose name has not been publicly released by the school district, was praised for creating hands-on projects that connect students with local issues. Colleagues describe a classroom where students don't just read about laws and voting but actually practice civic skills through mock debates, community surveys, and meetings with local officials.

The Founders' Five award includes a cash prize and a recognition ceremony planned for later this spring. School administrators say they are proud of the honor and hope it draws attention to the importance of civic education in middle schools. The other seven winners teach at schools in Salt Lake City, Provo, Ogden, and several rural districts. Organizers say they plan to make the award an annual tradition.
