L.K. Mondrey named Virginia Tech's natural resources youth education Extension specialist

Virginia Tech has announced that L.K. Mondrey will step into a newly created statewide position as the natural resources youth education Extension specialist. This role is designed to broaden the university's reach in providing practical, outdoor-based learning and leadership development for young people throughout Virginia.

Mondrey's work will focus on connecting youth with natural resource topics such as forestry, wildlife, water quality, and land stewardship. The goal is to move beyond traditional classroom settings and offer hands-on experiences that build both environmental awareness and practical skills. By partnering with local Extension offices, schools, and community groups, Mondrey will help develop programs that are accessible to diverse audiences across rural and urban areas alike.

A key part of the position involves training volunteers and educators, as well as creating curriculum materials that can be used in 4-H clubs, after-school programs, and summer camps. Mondrey will also work to strengthen pathways for youth interested in pursuing careers in natural resources, conservation, or environmental science. That includes mentoring and connecting teens with internships, workshops, and leadership opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.

Mondrey brings a background in both environmental education and youth development, which fits well with the collaborative nature of the role. In announcing the appointment, university officials emphasized that this position reflects a long-term commitment to fostering the next generation of environmental stewards. The hope is that young Virginians will not only learn about the natural world but also feel empowered to take active roles in protecting and managing it.
