A coalition of immigrant advocacy organizations and legal groups held a virtual meeting this week to demand that Governor Ron DeSantis reverse a new policy that bars undocumented students from enrolling at Florida's state colleges. The change, announced earlier this week, effectively prohibits any public college or university in the state from admitting students who cannot prove lawful U.S. residency. Critics argue the move is cruel and shortsighted, stripping educational opportunities from thousands of young people who grew up in Florida.
During the Zoom gathering, speakers highlighted the stories of students who have lived in the United States for most of their lives but now face a closed door to higher education. "These are our neighbors, our classmates, and our community members," one organizer said. "They deserve a path to a better future, not a wall built by Tallahassee." The coalition is calling on the DeSantis administration to reconsider the directive, warning that it will harm local economies and push talented students into uncertainty.
The ban applies to all 28 state colleges in Florida, which previously had varying policies on undocumented enrollment. Supporters of the ban argue it protects taxpayer-funded resources for legal residents. But immigrant rights groups say the policy is punitive and will force many students to abandon their dreams of earning a degree. The coalition plans to escalate its efforts with legal challenges and public awareness campaigns in the coming weeks.
