Education reforms dominated the NH Legislature this year. Most efforts failed.

Education reforms dominated the NH Legislature this year. Most efforts failed.

The voucher program, which currently serves a limited number of low-income families, was a flashpoint. Republicans argued it gives parents freedom to choose the best learning environment for their children, but opponents said it drains money from already struggling public districts. A bill to remove the income cap on the program was defeated in committee, while a separate proposal to allow families to use state funds for private tutoring and homeschooling materials never made it to a full vote.

On the Democratic side, a comprehensive plan to overhaul the school funding formula fell short. The plan aimed to address longstanding disparities between wealthy and poor towns by increasing state aid and reducing reliance on local property taxes. Another bill that would have set a minimum starting salary for teachers at 50,000 dollars also died in the Senate.

Lawmakers from both parties acknowledged that the deep divide on education policy is unlikely to close soon. With the next election cycle approaching, the debate over how to fund and structure New Hampshire's schools is expected to return with even more intensity next year. For now, the status quo remains largely intact.
