Grand Forks school officials are advancing a plan to place a high needs special education program inside Century Elementary, a shift from earlier discussions about leasing a standalone facility for the service.
The proposal would keep the program within an existing district building rather than moving students to an off site location. District leaders say the change could simplify logistics, keep students closer to their neighborhood peers, and make better use of space already available in the school.
Under the plan, Century Elementary would set aside classrooms for students who require intensive support, including specialized instruction and additional staff. The program is designed for students whose needs go beyond what typical classroom settings can provide.
Officials noted that placing the program in a district school would allow staff to share resources such as therapy rooms, meal service, and transportation. It would also let students take part in general school activities when appropriate.
Some families and staff have raised questions about space, staffing levels, and how the program would affect existing classrooms at Century. District leaders said they will gather feedback before finalizing the plan.
The proposal is expected to go before the school board for further review in the coming weeks. If approved, the program could begin serving students at Century Elementary as early as next school year, though a timeline has not been set.
