Which U.S. religious groups are most highly educated?

A new analysis of educational achievement reveals a significant gap in college completion rates across America's religious landscape. Adherents of Hinduism and Judaism stand out, far surpassing other major religious groups in the proportion of members holding at least a bachelor's degree.

According to the data, a striking 77% of Hindu adults in the United States have completed a four-year college education. Jewish Americans follow closely, with 65% holding a bachelor's degree. These figures dramatically outpace the national average for all U.S. adults, which sits at 34%.

The findings highlight the diverse educational profiles within the nation's faith communities. Mainline Protestants, Catholics, and Muslims all show college completion rates near or slightly above the national average. Conversely, some historically black Protestant traditions and evangelical Protestant groups report lower rates of degree attainment, often correlated with factors like age demographics and regional concentration.

Experts suggest the high numbers for Hindus and Jews are influenced by several factors, including immigration patterns for Hindus, who often arrive in the U.S. through employment-based visa programs requiring advanced skills. For both groups, a longstanding cultural emphasis on academic and professional achievement is also considered a significant contributor. This educational divide underscores the complex interplay between faith, culture, and socioeconomic status in American society.
