The Utah State Board of Education has approved the adoption of Gemini for Education, an artificial intelligence assistant designed for use by students, teachers, and school staff across public schools in the state. The move marks a significant step in integrating generative AI into everyday learning environments.
Under the new initiative, educators will be able to use the tool to help create lesson plans, generate quiz questions, and provide personalized feedback on student work. Students, meanwhile, will have access to the AI for research assistance, writing support, and interactive tutoring in subjects like math and science. The system is designed to operate within school-approved data privacy guidelines, meaning student information will not be used to train the underlying models.
Board officials emphasized that the tool is meant to supplement, not replace, human instruction. Training sessions will be offered to help teachers understand how to use the AI effectively and ethically. Some districts have already piloted similar tools, reporting that students engaged more deeply with material when they could ask the AI for instant clarification.
Critics have raised concerns about over-reliance on AI, potential for cheating, and the digital divide among students who lack reliable internet access at home. The board acknowledged these issues and said it will monitor usage closely, adjusting policies as needed. The rollout is expected to begin in select classrooms this fall, with broader adoption planned over the next school year.
