Hunter education courses available online and in person across Georgia

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is pushing hunters to finish their required safety education before the season ramps up. With both online and in-person options available, the agency wants to make sure everyone heading into the woods has the proper training.

The online portion lets participants work through the material at their own pace, covering the basics like firearm handling, tree stand safety, and hunting ethics. Once that part is done, students must sign up for a hands-on field day to complete the certification. Those in-person sessions are held at various locations across the state, including wildlife management areas, shooting ranges, and community centers.

Officials note that anyone born on or after January 1, 1961, must have a valid hunter education certificate to purchase a hunting license in Georgia. The course is free, but spots in the field sessions can fill up quickly, especially as the season approaches. The DNR suggests checking the online registration system early to secure a seat.

The agency also reminds hunters that the certification is recognized in all states, so completing it in Georgia works even if you plan to hunt elsewhere. For those who have already taken the course, the DNR says it is a good time to review the material and refresh your skills. Safety, they stress, is not just a one-time lesson but a habit that should stick with you every time you step into the field.
