For Coleman, this hands-on training is a stepping stone to a career she has worked toward for years. But behind the scenes, a larger question looms over her future and the futures of thousands like her: will the federal Pell Grant program continue to cover programs like hers?

The debate over the US Education Workforce Pell has intensified in recent weeks, with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle weighing in on whether the grant, which currently helps low-income students pay for college, should be expanded or restricted. Supporters argue that expanding Pell to cover short-term workforce training programs, including nursing certifications and technical trades, would help fill critical labor shortages in healthcare and other industries. Opponents, however, worry about the cost and whether such programs truly lead to stable, well-paying jobs.

For Coleman, the stakes are personal. She juggles classes, clinical hours, and a part-time job, relying on Pell to cover tuition and supplies.
