VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Education Secretary Linda McMahon has laid out a series of major policy shifts that will reshape the nation's public school system, drawing both sharp criticism and cautious support from lawmakers and educators. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, McMahon outlined plans to streamline federal oversight, increase local control, and redirect funding toward school choice initiatives.
The most controversial element involves a proposal to move certain special education responsibilities from the Department of Education to the Department of Health and Human Services. Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia and other Democratic leaders have raised alarms, arguing that such a transfer could disrupt services for millions of students with disabilities. "This is not a bureaucratic reshuffling," Kaine said. "This is a direct threat to the rights and resources that families rely on."
McMahon defended the move, stating that HHS is better equipped to handle the medical and therapeutic aspects of special education, while the Education Department should focus on academic standards and accountability. She also announced plans to reduce federal mandates on curriculum and testing, giving states more flexibility in how they measure student performance.
Critics worry the changes could widen the gap between wealthy and underfunded school districts. Supporters argue that cutting federal red tape will allow innovation to flourish at the local level. The full impact of these changes remains uncertain, but McMahon made clear that the administration intends to move quickly.
