Louisiana voters dealt a decisive blow to plans for a breakaway St. George school district on election night, rejecting the constitutional amendment that would have allowed its creation. Amendment 2, which sought to permit the incorporation of a new school system within the city of St. George, failed to gain majority support both statewide and within East Baton Rouge Parish.
Preliminary results showed that a clear majority of voters across Louisiana opposed the measure, with opposition also strong in the parish where the new district would have been carved out. The proposal had been a contentious issue for years, pitting advocates who argued for local control and better educational outcomes against opponents who warned of financial strain on the remaining Baton Rouge school system and concerns over segregation.
With the amendment's defeat, the push to separate from the East Baton Rouge Parish school system appears stalled for now. Supporters had framed the vote as a matter of community choice and parental rights, while critics pointed to potential funding losses for the larger district and the logistical challenges of dividing resources. The outcome leaves the existing parish-wide school system intact, at least for the foreseeable future, as both sides digest the results of a campaign that drew intense interest and significant spending.
