A primary school in the Lake District has been told it must take urgent action after a recent Ofsted inspection found a significant drop in the quality of education. The report, published this week, downgraded the school's overall rating from "Good" to "Requires Improvement," citing weaknesses in curriculum planning and teaching consistency.
Inspectors noted that while pupils at the school are polite and feel safe, the standard of learning has slipped since the last inspection. Leaders were criticized for not ensuring that teachers have clear guidance on what students should be learning at each stage. As a result, some children, particularly in key subjects like reading and mathematics, are not making the progress they should.
The report also highlighted gaps in how staff check what pupils have understood. In some lessons, teachers moved on to new topics before students had fully grasped the previous material. This has led to uneven achievement across different year groups.
The school's headteacher acknowledged the findings and said a plan is already in place to address the issues. Staff are receiving additional training, and the curriculum is being reviewed to make sure it is more structured and ambitious. The local authority has pledged support, but Ofsted has warned that a follow-up inspection will take place sooner than usual to monitor progress.
Parents have expressed concern, with some saying they were surprised by the report. The school has scheduled a meeting to discuss the next steps with families.
