A Metro Nashville Public Schools bus driver who transports special education students was arrested Wednesday afternoon on charges of driving under the influence. Police say the driver struck a parked vehicle while operating the school bus, leading to the arrest.
According to authorities, the crash occurred in the late afternoon. Officers responded to the scene and determined the driver was impaired. The driver was taken into custody and charged with DUI. No students were reported to be on the bus at the time of the incident, but the situation has raised concerns about safety protocols for special education transportation.
The driver has been employed with MNPS for several years. District officials confirmed the employee has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. Metro Nashville Public Schools released a statement emphasizing that the safety of students is their top priority and that they are cooperating fully with law enforcement.
This incident comes as the district continues to face scrutiny over transportation issues, including driver shortages and vehicle maintenance. The driver's name has not been released pending formal charges. A court date has not yet been set.
