In a significant move to reshape its academic portfolio, the University of New Orleans (UNO), under the Louisiana State University system, has finalized a plan to cut and modify several degree programs. The changes are part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at aligning the university's offerings with student demand and strategic goals.
The most substantial impact will be felt in the College of Liberal Arts, Education, and Human Development. The bachelor's degree program in international studies will be discontinued, alongside the master's degree in drama and theatre. Furthermore, the bachelor's program in early childhood education will be phased out. Other modifications include consolidating certain graduate-level education programs and discontinuing a bachelor's in craft and design, though studio art concentrations will remain available.
University officials stated that the decisions followed a comprehensive review and are intended to strengthen UNO's long-term viability. They emphasized a commitment to supporting currently enrolled students in affected programs through to their graduation. The restructuring reflects ongoing challenges faced by many regional public universities, which are increasingly pressured to optimize resources and focus on high-enrollment, career-oriented fields. Faculty and students in the impacted departments are awaiting further details on the implementation timeline and the full implications for faculty positions.
