Lancaster County school districts are set to receive $55 million in special education funding for the 2026-27 school year, marking a modest increase from the $54 million allocated the previous year. The funding, approved by state education officials, aims to support programs and services for students with disabilities across the county's public school systems.
The additional $1 million, while not a dramatic jump, will help districts cover rising costs tied to specialized instruction, therapy services, and classroom aides. Local administrators have noted that special education expenses often outpace general education funding due to the need for smaller class sizes, individualized learning plans, and trained support staff.
School board members in several districts welcomed the increase but emphasized that it still falls short of fully covering mandated services. Federal and state laws require schools to provide a free and appropriate public education to all students with disabilities, regardless of cost. Districts often supplement state funding with local tax revenue to meet those obligations.
The allocation comes as Lancaster County continues to see steady enrollment in special education programs. Officials expect the funds to be distributed based on student population and specific needs, with each district determining how to best use the money for staffing, equipment, or training.
While the $55 million figure represents a step forward, advocates for special education say ongoing state investment is needed to address long-standing funding gaps. The new money will be available starting July 2026.
