Steel Center technical school reopens just in time for the school year

Nick Love earned his carpentry certifications at the Steel Center for Career and Technical Education, and instead of heading off to a job site, he walked right back through the doors. This time, he is on the other side of the classroom, working as an instructor. His return marks a fresh chapter for the school, which reopened its main building in Jefferson just as the new academic year kicked off.

The timing was tight. Crews had been working through the summer to finish renovations, and the final touches were still being applied days before students arrived. But the building is now fully operational, with updated workshops, new safety equipment, and a refreshed layout for the automotive, welding, and health sciences programs. School officials say the reopening was critical, as enrollment numbers had been climbing even while the facility was under construction.

For Love, the chance to teach in the same shops where he learned is a full circle moment. He remembers the patience of his own instructors and hopes to pass that along. The school is running a full schedule, and administrators are already looking at adding evening classes to meet demand. Students this year will find a mix of familiar faces and brand new machinery, all under one roof again.
