NEW MARTINSVILLE — The landscape of Wetzel County’s high schools will be drastically different in 2025 due to decisions made this year. The Wetzel County Board of Education voted in November to consolidate the county’s four high schools into two. In the 2025-26 school year, Paden City High School will merge with Magnolia High School, while Valley High School will join forces with Hundred High School.
This significant change aims to address declining enrollment numbers and financial challenges faced by the district. Board members believe that consolidating resources will enhance educational opportunities for students, allowing for better facilities and more diverse extracurricular programs.
The decision has sparked various reactions among parents, students, and staff. Supporters argue that the move will strengthen academic programs, while opponents express concerns about the loss of community identity and the potential impact on student transportation.
As the board prepares for this transition, community meetings will be held to discuss the implications and gather feedback from stakeholders.
