Thousands of educators and supporters gathered at the state capitol today, demanding more funding for public schools as districts across the state face painful budget decisions. The rally comes at a time when many school systems are being forced to cut programs, close buildings, and lay off staff due to shrinking state aid and rising costs.
District leaders say the financial strain is the worst they have seen in over a decade. Several large urban districts have already announced plans to close under-enrolled schools, while rural districts are cutting bus routes and eliminating elective classes. The gaps in funding between wealthy and poor districts continue to widen, with property-tax-dependent schools in low-income areas bearing the heaviest burden.
Teachers at the rally said they are frustrated by large class sizes, outdated textbooks, and a lack of support staff. Many carried signs calling for a fair funding formula that accounts for student needs, not just local property values. Organizers estimated the crowd at over 10,000 people, making it one of the largest education rallies in recent years.
State lawmakers have proposed competing budget plans, but none fully address the shortfall. Without new revenue, districts warn that more cuts are coming. The rally is expected to put pressure on the governor and legislative leaders ahead of next month's budget deadline. For now, schools are left waiting, while students and teachers feel the impact of every delayed decision.
