Seeking technical education, schools may be looking inward

Vermont's career and technical education centers are struggling to keep up with rising student interest. Enrollment demand has grown faster than these centers can expand, pushing school districts to rethink how they deliver hands-on learning. Instead of waiting for new facilities or state funding, some schools are turning to their own resources to meet the need.

The push comes as more students and parents see technical education as a direct path to well-paying jobs in fields like healthcare, construction, and advanced manufacturing. Traditional four-year college enrollment has dipped in recent years, while waitlists for programs in welding, nursing, and automotive technology have swelled. At several regional centers, students are turned away each year due to limited seats and instructor shortages.

In response, some districts are creating satellite programs within their own high schools. By using existing classroom space and hiring part-time industry professionals, they can offer introductory courses without requiring students to travel to a central campus. Other schools are partnering with local businesses to provide apprenticeships that count toward graduation credits.

State education officials acknowledge that building new career centers takes years and millions of dollars. In the meantime, they are encouraging schools to be creative. Grants for equipment and teacher training have helped, but the gap between demand and capacity remains wide. For now, the most immediate solution may be the one already taking shape: schools looking inward to build technical programs from the ground up.
