Reynolds School District officials have expressed profound disappointment after learning that the district will receive no funding from Oregon’s summer learning grants for the 2026-2028 cycle. The grants, designed to support academic enrichment and recreational programs during the summer months, have been a critical resource for many districts across the state. However, Reynolds, which serves a diverse and economically challenged student population, has been completely excluded from the upcoming funding period.
District leaders stated that the decision leaves them without the necessary financial support to maintain or expand summer learning opportunities that have helped mitigate learning loss and provide safe, structured environments for students. “We are deeply disappointed by this outcome,” a district spokesperson said. “Our students and families rely on these programs to bridge educational gaps and offer enrichment that many cannot access otherwise.”
The loss of funding comes at a time when Reynolds is already grappling with budget constraints and rising operational costs. Without the grant, the district may be forced to scale back or eliminate summer programs that have proven beneficial for academic recovery and social development. Community advocates have called on state officials to reconsider the allocation, emphasizing the disproportionate impact on underserved communities. The Oregon Department of Education has not yet provided a detailed explanation for the funding decision, but Reynolds leaders are exploring alternative sources to keep their summer initiatives alive.
