Zoo Boise officially opened the doors to its new education building on May 21, marking a major milestone for the facility's community outreach programs. The 5.6 million dollar structure is designed to serve as a hub for school groups, summer camps, and public workshops, offering a dedicated space for hands-on learning about wildlife and conservation.
The two-story building features flexible classrooms, a large gathering area, and direct access to outdoor animal exhibits. Zoo officials say the center will allow them to triple the number of students they can host each year, moving beyond the cramped temporary spaces used in the past. The project was funded through a combination of city bonds, private donations, and a grant from the local zoo foundation.
One of the standout features is a glass-walled observation deck that overlooks the zoo's main plaza, giving visitors a chance to watch animal encounters from above. The building also includes a demonstration kitchen for classes on sustainable eating and a lab space for dissecting owl pellets or studying insect life cycles.
"We wanted a place where curiosity can run wild," said the zoo's education director during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. "This building is not just about facts. It is about sparking a connection between people and the natural world."
The new education center is now open to the public as part of regular zoo admission, with special programs scheduled to begin in early June.
