WesCeleb Scout McKibben-Baier ’27 on Globetrotting, Gender Equity in Education, and Getting Out of the Comfort Zone

Scout McKibben-Baier, a member of the class of 2027, spent last year living on three different continents. Her travels exposed her to a wide range of legal systems and social norms, sparking an interest that now shapes her academic path. She focuses on public policy and civic engagement at Wesleyan, where she has turned those experiences into a driving force for her studies.

The Obama Foundation selected McKibben-Baier for its Voyager program, a recognition that highlights her commitment to global issues. Her time abroad showed her how gender equity in education varies from place to place, with some regions offering broad access while others restrict it. These contrasts pushed her to think critically about how policy shapes daily life.

McKibben-Baier says stepping outside her comfort zone was not always easy. Adjusting to new languages, customs, and classrooms required patience and flexibility. But she credits those challenges with helping her grow. She encourages other students to seek opportunities that feel unfamiliar, noting that discomfort often leads to the most meaningful learning.

Her work now combines travel experience with a focus on practical solutions. Whether studying local governance or volunteering in community programs, she aims to connect what she saw abroad with what she can do at home. For McKibben-Baier, the journey is just beginning.
