September is Food Safety Education Month

TYLER, Texas - With September designated as Food Safety Education Month, local health officials are using the opportunity to remind families and businesses about the simple steps that prevent foodborne illness.

Ginger Points, Director of the Environmental Health Department at NET Health, recently appeared on a local lifestyle program to discuss why this month matters and what people often overlook in their daily routines.

Points emphasized that food safety is not just about restaurant inspections. It starts at home, in the grocery store, and even in how leftovers are handled. She noted that one of the biggest mistakes people make is leaving perishable food out at room temperature for too long. The general rule is that food should not sit out for more than two hours, and that time drops to one hour if the room is above 90 degrees.

Another key point she raised was proper handwashing. Many people rinse quickly, but the recommendation is to scrub with soap for at least 20 seconds, especially before handling raw meat, eggs, or produce.

Cross-contamination is also a major concern. Using the same cutting board for raw chicken and then for vegetables without washing it in between can spread harmful bacteria. Points suggested having separate boards or washing thoroughly with hot, soapy water between uses.

For those who cook in bulk, cooling food correctly is just as important. Large pots of soup or stew should be divided into smaller shallow containers so they cool down fast enough to prevent bacterial growth.

The month serves as a reminder that food safety is a shared responsibility. Whether dining out or cooking at home, staying aware of these basics can reduce the risk of illness and keep meals enjoyable for everyone.
