A total of 31 schools across Arkansas have received the School of Conservation Leadership designation, a recognition awarded by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. This marks the first time the state has handed out this specific honor, which aims to highlight campuses that go beyond basic environmental education.
The new designation is not just about having a recycling bin in the hallway. Schools had to show a real commitment to outdoor learning, wildlife stewardship, and hands-on projects that connect students with their natural surroundings. That could mean anything from maintaining a school garden to organizing creek cleanups or building bird habitats on campus. The idea is to create a culture where conservation is part of daily school life, not just a chapter in a science textbook.
According to the commission, the selected schools range from elementary to high school, spread across both rural and urban areas. Each one submitted an application detailing its current programs and future plans. A review panel then scored the submissions based on student involvement, community partnerships, and measurable outcomes.
The response from educators has been positive. Several principals said the designation gives their students a sense of pride and validates the extra work teachers put into outdoor lessons. The commission also hopes the program will grow, with more schools applying in the coming years.
For now, the 31 schools will receive a special banner and access to additional resources from the AGFC. The goal is simple: turn today's students into tomorrow's conservation leaders.
