Record Low Share of Americans Say College Is Very Important

A new survey shows that only 31 percent of Americans now describe a college degree as very important, the lowest level ever recorded in the history of the poll. The finding marks a sharp break from earlier decades, when a majority of adults viewed higher education as a central step toward a stable career and a middle class life.

Analysts point to several forces behind the shift. The rising cost of tuition and the burden of student loans weigh heavily on families who once treated a four year degree as a safe investment. Political divisions have also turned campuses into symbols in a broader cultural fight, pushing some parents and students to look elsewhere. At the same time, anxiety about artificial intelligence is reshaping how people think about work. If software can handle tasks that once required a degree, many wonder whether the expense still pays off.

Researchers caution that the headline number hides a more complex picture. Students and families still see value in education, especially in fields tied to health care, engineering and skilled trades. What has changed is the assumption that any degree, from any school, guarantees a good outcome. Many now weigh shorter programs, certificates and apprenticeships against the traditional four year path.

The drop matters for colleges that depend on enrollment, and for employers who rely on graduates. It also raises a larger question about how the country will train its workforce in the years ahead.
