New Oklahoma education laws take effect July 1: AI oversight, testing changes, teacher pipeline

Oklahoma is set to implement a slate of new education laws on July 1, bringing changes to classroom technology, student assessments, and the teacher workforce. Senator Ally Seifried outlined the key measures, which aim to address modern challenges in public schools.

One major focus is artificial intelligence. The new laws establish guidelines for AI use in classrooms, requiring school districts to develop policies on how the technology can be used for instruction and student work. The goal is to balance innovation with academic integrity, ensuring students learn how to use AI responsibly without relying on it for cheating.

Testing procedures are also getting an overhaul. The state is moving away from some traditional standardized tests in favor of shorter, more frequent assessments that give teachers real-time data on student progress. Supporters say this will reduce test anxiety and provide a clearer picture of learning gaps throughout the school year.

On the teacher front, the laws aim to strengthen the pipeline of new educators. Provisions include expanded alternative certification pathways, making it easier for professionals from other fields to transition into teaching. There are also incentives for paraprofessionals and support staff to earn full teaching credentials, addressing chronic shortages in rural and urban districts.

Seifried emphasized that these changes are designed to modernize Oklahoma's education system while keeping local control in the hands of school boards and parents. The laws take effect at the start of the new fiscal year, with districts expected to have policies in place by the first day of school.
