Meta settlement not the answer to state's education funding crisis

The Illinois Federation of Teachers and the Chicago Teachers Union have a habit of chasing whatever shiny object rolls into view. The latest distraction is the massive settlement from Meta, the parent company of Facebook. But treating that payout as the cure for the state's chronic school funding shortfall is a mistake.

The unions are reportedly eager to steer a chunk of that money toward education budgets. It sounds good on a flyer. But a one-time legal settlement, no matter how large, does not fix a structural problem. Illinois has a funding formula that has been underfunded for decades. The state owes schools billions under its own evidence-based model. A single check, even a big one, is not a recurring revenue stream. It is a one-shot deal that would patch a hole for a year or two, then leave districts right back where they started.

The real issue is that the state keeps avoiding the hard choices. Instead of pushing for a fair tax structure or cutting wasteful spending elsewhere, the unions want to grab a windfall and call it progress. That is not leadership. That is a band-aid on a broken leg.

What the state needs is a sustained commitment to fully fund the formula, year after year, regardless of what tech companies are paying out in court. Chasing settlement money is a distraction from that fight. The unions should be at the capitol demanding a real plan, not celebrating a lucky break. Otherwise, they are just helping politicians kick the can down the road again.
