The Michigan Constitution puts the state board of education independently in charge of public instruction and hiring a state superintendent. John James says as governor, he'd want more control.
James, the Republican candidate for governor, is calling for greater accountability in Michigan's education system. He argues the current structure leaves the governor with too little authority over how schools are run and how students perform.
Under the existing system, the state board of education is elected separately from the governor. That board selects the state superintendent, who oversees the department of education. James says this arrangement creates a disconnect between voters and the officials responsible for results.
He wants the governor to have a stronger role in setting education policy and in hiring the state's top education official. Supporters of the current system say independence protects schools from political swings. Critics of James's proposal say it could concentrate too much power in one office.
The debate comes as Michigan schools face pressure over test scores, learning loss and funding. James says parents deserve clear lines of responsibility when schools fall short.
