A new piece of legislation passed by the Knesset is designed to systematically dismantle the Palestinian education system in East Jerusalem, according to rights groups and local educators. The law gives Israeli authorities expanded powers to close schools and educational institutions that operate under the Palestinian Authority's curriculum, which has been the standard for Palestinian communities in the city for decades.
Critics argue the move is not about educational standards but about erasing Palestinian identity and cultural presence in the contested city. The law allows for the seizure of school property and the arrest of teachers and administrators who refuse to comply with Israeli directives. Many schools in East Jerusalem already face chronic underfunding, overcrowding, and the threat of demolition. This new legal framework accelerates those pressures.
Palestinian officials have condemned the legislation as a form of collective punishment and a violation of international law, which recognizes East Jerusalem as occupied territory. The United Nations and several European governments have also expressed concern, warning that the law undermines the right to education for tens of thousands of Palestinian children. In response, Israeli lawmakers defended the bill, claiming it is necessary to prevent what they call incitement and to ensure loyalty to the state. Local Palestinian leaders, however, see it as a clear attempt to force a demographic and cultural shift through legal means.
