Gulfport student selected as state board of education junior representative

GULFPORT, Miss. -- The Mississippi State Board of Education has chosen Cannon Parker, a student at Gulfport High School, to serve as a junior representative for the upcoming school year. Parker will join a group of student representatives who act as non-voting members on the board. Their main job is to offer student perspectives on policy decisions during their two-year term.

Parker carries a 4.25 grade point average and stays active outside the classroom. He gives back to the community through work with the Salvation Army, showing a commitment to service that goes beyond his academic achievements. The junior representative program gives students a direct voice in state education matters, letting them weigh in on issues that affect schools across Mississippi.

School officials say Parker's selection reflects well on both the student and the district. The role requires regular attendance at board meetings and a willingness to speak up on behalf of fellow students. Parker will start his duties when the new school term begins.
