The city's free 2-K program will expand to every borough next fall, adding seats in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens as officials push to make early childhood education available citywide.
The program, which currently serves thousands of families in select districts, will grow to cover all five boroughs when the new school year begins. The expansion adds seats in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, building on existing offerings in the Bronx and Staten Island.
Officials said the move is part of a broader effort to give more families access to free, full-day early education for two-year-olds. The program has been popular among parents who say it eases the cost of child care and helps children prepare for pre-K.
The city plans to work with community organizations and existing providers to open new classrooms. Families will be able to apply through the same process used for other early education programs, with priority given to children in the districts where seats are available.
Advocates welcomed the expansion but said the city must ensure the new seats are well funded and staffed. They noted that early childhood programs across the country have struggled with teacher shortages and rising costs.
Officials said more details on locations and enrollment timelines will be released in the coming months. Parents interested in the program are encouraged to check for updates as the fall enrollment period approaches.
