Education Minister Edouard Geffray announced that hundreds of schools across France will remain closed on Monday, citing security concerns ahead of major demonstrations planned for the following day. The decision affects institutions in several regions where tensions have been mounting over proposed changes to the education system.
The closures come as unions and student organizations prepare for what they describe as a decisive day of action. Teachers, parents, and students have voiced growing frustration with reforms they say will increase class sizes, reduce funding for support staff, and weaken protections for vulnerable students. Several rallies have already taken place in cities including Paris, Lyon, and Marseille, with participants calling on the government to reconsider its approach.
Geffray defended the move to close schools, stating that the safety of students and staff remains the top priority. He added that local authorities are working closely with law enforcement to monitor the situation and prevent disruptions. Critics, however, argue that shutting schools disrupts learning and places unnecessary strain on families who must arrange childcare at short notice.
Union leaders have promised that Tuesday's protests will be peaceful but warned that the movement could expand if their demands are ignored. Negotiations between the ministry and education representatives are expected to resume later this week. For now, many parents and teachers are bracing for further uncertainty as the standoff continues.
