FRANKFORT - Some students attending Kentucky colleges and universities might not have a dorm room or other place to call home, and legislators heard Tuesday about a proposal to address that problem.
Members of the education committee listened to testimony about homelessness among college students, a issue that often stays hidden because those affected are reluctant to speak up. Students who lack stable housing may sleep in cars, stay with friends, or bounce between temporary arrangements while trying to keep up with classes.
The proposal calls for better tracking of how many students face housing insecurity and for building connections between campuses and community groups that already provide shelter and support. Supporters say colleges need clear ways to identify students in need and direct them to food, housing, and emergency aid.
Lawmakers asked questions about funding and how such a program would work alongside existing services. No vote was taken. The discussion is expected to continue as the committee gathers more information before any recommendation moves forward.
