Economist Justin Wolfers Says Financial Education Is Failing And There's a Big Problem. People Barely Trust…

Economist Justin Wolfers argues that traditional financial education is failing because it ignores a fundamental problem: people simply do not trust the experts delivering the message. He points out that most people have never seen a germ, yet they still wash their hands. That simple habit proves experts can convince people to change their behavior based on something they cannot see or experience directly. So why does the same logic fall apart when it comes to money?

The answer, according to Wolfers, comes down to credibility. When a doctor tells someone to wash their hands, the advice feels neutral. When a financial expert offers guidance, people often suspect a hidden agenda. They wonder if the expert is selling a product, protecting the wealthy, or benefiting from the advice in ways that hurt ordinary savers. That suspicion makes even good advice easy to dismiss.

Wolfers suggests that financial education programs often focus on delivering facts and formulas. They teach compound interest, budgeting, and retirement planning. But they rarely address the deeper issue of trust. If the audience believes the messenger is working against them, no amount of information will change behavior.

He argues that building trust requires transparency, consistency, and a willingness to admit uncertainty. Experts need to show they understand the real pressures people face, not just the theory. Until that happens, financial education will keep running into the same wall. People will nod, ignore the advice, and keep making the same choices. The problem is not a lack of knowledge. It is a lack of faith in the people providing it.
