Connecticut has a real chance to strengthen its schools and help families, and it should take it. A new federal tax program could direct more than $270 billion every year into the nation's educational system, and states that opt in stand to gain the most. The choice before Connecticut lawmakers is straightforward: join the program and put those resources to work for students, or stand aside while other states move forward.
The program is designed to reward states that invest in education by offering federal tax benefits tied to local spending. For Connecticut, that means more money for classrooms, teachers, and support services without relying solely on state budgets that are already stretched thin. Districts serving low income communities would see some of the biggest gains, since the program targets areas where resources are most needed.
Critics may argue that the program adds complexity or that the benefits are uncertain. But the numbers are hard to ignore. With billions of dollars flowing into education nationwide each year, even a modest share for Connecticut would be significant. The state has an opportunity to ease pressure on local taxpayers while giving students access to better facilities, updated materials, and expanded programs.
Lawmakers should move quickly to opt in and secure Connecticut's place in the program. Students and families cannot afford to wait while the state debates the merits. The federal tax program offers a practical path to stronger schools, and Connecticut should take it.
