Colorado Districts Seek State Approval for New Online and Hybrid Schools

School boards in El Paso County, Colorado, are moving to expand digital learning options by asking the state to approve a set of new multi-district online and hybrid schools. The proposals would create programs that blend remote instruction with regular classroom time, rather than relying entirely on virtual learning.

Under the plans, some of the schools would bring students together for in-person instruction in core classes and electives two days per week, with the remaining days spent learning online. Supporters say the model gives families more flexibility while preserving the face-to-face contact that many students need to stay engaged and on track.

The request now goes to state education officials, who must review and authorize multi-district online programs before they can enroll students. District leaders argue that demand for alternatives has grown, and that families want options that do not force a choice between fully remote and fully in-person schooling.

If approved, the schools would serve students across district lines, pooling resources and staff to offer courses that individual districts might struggle to provide on their own. Officials say the hybrid approach could also help students who need flexible schedules because of health concerns, work, or other commitments outside school.

The state review process will examine the proposals for academic rigor, staffing, and accountability before any final decision is made. District leaders expect a decision in the coming months and say they will keep families informed as the applications move forward.
