Birmingham extends $1 million investment in financial education for youth, families

The City of Birmingham has confirmed it will continue backing the IMC Financial Freedom Project with another $1 million in funding, keeping a local financial education initiative alive for students and their families. The renewed investment extends a partnership that started two years ago, when the city first committed money to teach money management skills in schools and community spaces.

City officials say the program has already reached thousands of young people through classroom workshops, after-school sessions, and family-focused events. Topics go beyond basic budgeting, covering credit building, saving for college, understanding loans, and avoiding predatory financial traps. Organizers have also worked with parents, offering sessions on household finances and long-term planning.

The new funding will allow the project to expand into more schools and community centers across Birmingham, with a focus on neighborhoods where access to traditional banking and financial advice has been limited. Program leaders say they will also add digital tools and online resources, making it easier for families to continue learning at home.

Mayor Randall Woodfin praised the renewed commitment, noting that financial knowledge is a key part of building stronger communities. He pointed to the program's track record and said the city wants to make sure every young person in Birmingham leaves school with at least a basic understanding of how money works in the real world.

The IMC Financial Freedom Project, backed by the investment management firm IMC, has operated in Birmingham since 2023. The new funds will support programming through the next two years.
